The Rarick family is traveling to New York to live a more suitable lifestyle after their five and ten cent store chain becomes enormously successful. None of them are prepared for what the big city will do to their lives.

Jennifer falls in love with an architect (Leslie Howard) and manages to seduce him, much to the chagrin of his sister who thinks Jennifer is a society outcast.

More trouble erupts when Jennifer's pilot brother Avery learns that their mother is having an affair due to the neglect of their workaholic father. Avery senses that the family is falling apart and in a drunken rage crashes his plane, killing himself.

The suicide works and the family reconciles. Deciding a long trip to Europe would help their relations they board an ocean liner; Howard is waiting at the dock and vows to meet Jennifer in Europe were they will be married.
